This game is obviously Sega's version of Capcom's Final Fight. In Japan, the series is called "Bare Knuckle" instead.

The series really stands out not for its gameplay, but for its music.

Yuzo Koshiro is one of the more popular Japanese video game composers, and I think it started out with how he approached this game's soundtrack. He managed to incorporate themes such as R&B, club music, techno, and hip hop into this game with an audio programming language he made himself called "Music Love".

This ended up making all 3 SoR games have some of the best soundtracks to come out of a Sega Genesis/Megadrive.

Here's a summary of the story as it was told in this video:

There was once a city that used to be peaceful, but then it was turned into a dangerous city by a crime syndicate. Three young officers tried to do to something about it with their superiors, but they kept getting turned down. So they quit the police force to go on their own terms with dealing with this issue.

Adam Hunter, Axel Stone, & Blaze Fielding are these young officers. Together, they bare their knuckles to travel through the Streets of Rage, and risk their lives to save the now-corrupted city on their own.
